Ghosts of Saltmarsh comes to D&D adventure board game series
Fishy business.
Sail dark waters to save innocent townsfolk in the Ghosts of Saltmarsh: Board Game expansion for the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure System series.
Taking place in the classic D&D setting, the Ghosts of Saltmarsh: Board Game expansion adds a collection of new adventures for players to experience, as well as a selection of fresh-faced monsters to fight and people to help. (Thanks BoardgameGeek.) Players will require one of the core releases in the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure System series in order to play the Ghosts of Saltmarsh expansion, which comes with its own map for players to explore and a new storyline centred around a dreary coastal village.
The King of Keoland seeks to turn the sleepy town of Saltmarsh into a bustling trading port. However, there are those who wish to keep the clamour of civilisation away by any means necessary. The players arrive in Saltmarsh in the midst of an attack and must rescue the innocent civilians from the newfound dangers they face. As players complete each leg of the overarching campaign within the Dungeons & Dragons board game, they will experience a variety of scenarios throughout the lands of Saltmarsh.
As in the main releases in the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure System series, the Ghosts of Saltmarsh expansion sees one to five players becoming heroes with their own set of unique skills and abilities, which they’ll be able to add to and improve as they gain experience and level up. Eventually, the players will have to face the expansion’s two villains, with the aim of defeating them and saving the villagers of Saltmarsh.
The core releases in the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure System series include the Castle Ravenloft Board Game - which takes place in the same setting covered by the latest D&D Sourcebook, Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft - Temple of Elemental Evil Board Game and Tomb of Annihilation Board Game.
The Ghosts of Saltmarsh: Board Game expansion is being published by Wizkids, the studio that’s best known for releasing the horror tabletop title Fury of Dracula: Fourth Edition, as well as the deckbuilding board game Mage Knight.
This announcement follows the release of Monopoly: Dungeons & Dragons, a new edition of the classic board game that has players becoming adventurers looking to ensnare monsters on behalf of Volothamp Geddarm. Rather than buying properties, players will be acquiring monster spaces through D&D currency, as well as finding treasure and experiencing encounters - till the game eventually ends and the player with the most D&D currency wins.
The Ghosts of Saltmarsh: Board Game expansion is set to be released sometime in August, with a standard edition and a premium edition - containing painted miniatures - planned.
