He-Man and the Masters of the Universe RPG on the way from D&D Beyond creator
Legends of Grayskull is coming next year.
Wield the Sword of Power in protection of Eternia or scheme to bring about its demise in Legends of Grayskull: The Masters of the Universe Tabletop Roleplaying Game, an upcoming RPG based on the ‘80s series.
The newly-announced RPG will be set in the same universe as original animated cartoon He-Man and The Masters of the Universe and its spin-off She-Ra: Princess of Power, as well as the recent She-Ra and the Princesses of Power - which concluded on Netflix in May after five seasons and a nomination for a Daytime Emmy award.
The upcoming roleplaying game is based on the Cortex Prime game system, which was successfully funded on Kickstarter in 2017 and was originally created by Cam Banks for Margaret Weis Productions. Banks initially developed the Cortex roleplaying system for the publisher’s various licensed RPGs such as the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying Game and the Firefly Roleplaying Game, before acquiring the rights and releasing it as its own game.
Fandom, the company behind Dungeons & Dragons online tool D&D Beyond, acquired the Cortex Prime game system last year and will be using it to create Legends of Grayskull alongside the toy and board game giant that owns the He-Man franchise, Mattel.
Fandom’s VP of Tabletop, Adam Bradford, told ComicBook.com that players will be able to create both heroes and villains similar to the characters they know from the Masters of the Universe franchise, as well their own original characters. As revealed in recent Masters of the Universe comic book series Masters of the Multiverse, there are many different versions of Eternia out there, which Bradford said will allow Legends of Grayskull players to make a wide variety of characters.
Throughout the RPG, players will be able to improve their various traits and abilities, changing the die they roll from a d4 to a d10 as they progress on the game’s mastery paths. Eventually, player characters can gather enough strength - or He-Force, as it’s called - to wield iconic weapons from the Masters of the Universe franchise, such as He-Man’s Sword of Power and She-Ra’s Sword of Protection.
The reveal of Legends of Grayskull follows several Masters of the Universe-related announcements, including a new He-Man Netflix series called Masters of the Universe: Revelation and an upcoming board game from CMON - the creator of games based on other classic cartoons such as Scooby-Doo and Wacky Races - entitled Masters of the Universe.
The release date for Legends of Grayskull: The Masters of the Universe Tabletop Roleplaying Game is currently set for sometime next year.
