Here’s an edition of Monopoly where you trade in Spongebob Squarepants memes
I’ll take one Handsome Squidward.
Purchase some imagination or Caveman Patrick in Monopoly: Spongebob Squarepants Meme Edition, an upcoming board game based on the internet’s love of the show.
Instead of acquiring underwater real estate, Monopoly: Spongebob Squarepants Meme Edition sees two to six players using purchasing images of various popular online jokes surrounding the classic children’s cartoon.
Since it first aired in 1999, Spongebob Squarepants has been adopted by social media as a source of visual gags and meme material, with stills of Handsome Squidward and Patrick shouting down a telephone becoming the backbone of internet humour amongst certain communities. Fans of the series and its subsequent memes can fully indulge in this newest edition of the family board game, with players gradually collecting a Twitter thread’s worth of Spongebob images.
Replacing the standard Monopoly playing pieces is a selection of iconic tokens from the animated series, including a Krabby Patty, a jellyfish and Mermaid-Man’s belt. Rather than hotels and houses, players will be placing Posts and Collections on to their purchased spaces, with their opponents having to pay in ‘likes’ whenever they land on them. Community Chest and Chance cards are replaced by Comment and Share cards - which players must hope will boost the popularity of their memes, instead of ruining their opportunity to go viral.
Monopoly: Spongebob Squarepants Meme Edition is being published by the The Op, the studio responsible for releasing several other Spongebob themed tabletop titles such as last year’s co-op game, Spongebob: Plankton Rising - in which players work together to prevent the cunning Chum Bucket proprietor from stealing a Krabby Patty - as well as the Spongebob Squarepants edition of Trivial Pursuit.
Spongebob Squarepants follows the adventures of a fry-cook who works at a fast-food restaurant called the Krusty Krab. Throughout the 13 seasons of the animated series, the sponge finds himself getting into shenanigans with various characters such as his friend Patrick Star and co-worker Squidward Tentacles. The show has since seen the release of three feature-length films, a musical and a spin-off series called Kamp Koral: Spongebob’s Under Years.
Monopoly: Spongebob Squarepants Meme Edition is available now at a retail price of $39.99 (£28).
